Ever the type-A personality, I wouldn’t doubt that I am the only person in the world who would turn housework into a competitive sport. ;)
seriousness kidding aside, I have realized that my procrastination and lack of motivation towards certain chores around my house are often put-off because I think that they will simply take too long and I don’t have the time to do it. I decided to put my theory to the test by timing some of the ‘daily chores’ around my house. In doing so, I surprised myself with how quickly they can get done, which then led to my next thought: if I set a timer for 5 minutes how much could I tackle?
Here’s what I accomplished after Nugget went to bed last night with my 5 minute intervals:
Interval 1) Took out garbage, replaced the garbage bag with a new one and watered all of my house plants.
Interval 2) Made my bed, put away Nugget’s pack-and-go crib, put away clothes that were lying around my room.
Interval 3) Gathered all laundry, sorted it and ran a load of darks, set-up coffee maker for the morning.
Interval 4) Gathered dishes around the house, ran dishwasher, made tea, put away Nugget’s toys.
Interval 5) Put away shoes and jackets in the closets, cut up strawberries for a snack, put away magazines into magazine rack.
All in, I spent 25 minutes doing chores around my house, but the 5 minute intervals kept it less daunting and quite honestly, it became a bit of a game to figure out how much I could do in the 5 minutes.
If you are like me and are incredibly distracted by your phone, might I suggest using a timer that isn’t on your cell phone. The pics above are a few cute finds that might help add a little fabulous to your timed chores. Heck….anything to make housework a little easier right?!?

Isn’t it so true that sometimes the best things in life are the most unexpected. This weekend was kind of like that. I had some plans, but overall it was a bit of a free-for-all for Nugget and I. Friday was a bit rough as I felt like I was coming down with yet another bug….BUT, a pretty relaxed day resulted in the amount of rest I needed to enjoy the rest of my time off with my boys. Here are some of the highlights.
Assorted tulips that I picked up on Saturday to bring even more spring to my house.
Despite an atrocious attempt at making brownies, I managed to salvage the homemade caramel to serve over ice cream. Topped with fleur de sel and it was a surprisingly delicious treat. Phewwww!!!! ;)
Dear John and I took our boys (and girl) to the dog park this weekend. While enjoying our walk, he pulled this out of his pocket. Said he saw it on “one of his favourite blogs” and decided he would pick it up for me. :)
Loads of quality time with my Nugget.

I had mentioned in a previous post how one of my favourite things about living as a single (independent) woman is the fact that I get the entire master closet to myself.
The first time When I purchased this house, I didn’t realize how terribly tiny the master closet was. I know I have a bit of a hoarding problem when it comes to clothes, but truly, I was dealing with a closet that looked like it belonged in a hobbit hole. For the past year I have procrastinated cleaning and organizing my closet and two weeks ago I finally ran out of excuses.
Here are a couple of the learnings from my marathon organization session, the result of which is a happy, happy, happy girl who now can quite easily plan outfits and see what she actually owns. :)
Tip 1: Sort your items by type and then colour. I have segregated my clothes by categorizing them as shirt, dresses, pants & jackets. From there, I sorted each of the categories by colour, starting with lighter items on the left and moving to darker items on the right.
Tip 2: Keep items on display. My necklaces are sorted and hanging on a vintage hook on a side wall of the closet where I can easily see them when planning outfits.
Tip 3: Re-purpose items to fit your organization needs. I’ve used an old tie-rack to organize my belts.
Tip 4: Make it easy to declutter. On the top shelf of my closet, I have two, pretty boxes for putting donation clothing. Periodically, I will toss pieces that I am no longer wearing into the boxes so that I can take them to a charity once I have collected enough pieces.

This week is all about my beloved slow cooker. It’s getting chilly out again this week, so I couldn’t resist the idea of coming home to hot meals after a long day at work.
The first recipe I decided to make this week was a favourite of mine that my mom used to make: lazy cabbage rolls. This delicious casserole dish tastes like the real deal but without all the work of rolling individual cabbage rolls. Heck….it all goes down the same so why put in all that work I ask?!? ;)
Inspired by a number of recipes I found online, this is the version that I ended up making. I hope you all like this as much as I do….mmmm………:)
- 1lb ground turkey
- 1 head of green cabbage, diced
- 1 white onion, diced
- 2 fresh tomatoes, diced
- 1 green pepper, diced
- 2 cups of brown rice
- 2 small cans of tomato soup
- 1-15 ounce can of stewed tomatoes
- 1/4 cup of ketchup
- 1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tbsp dried mustard
- 1 Tbsp of diced garlic (approximately 3 cloves)
- salt & pepper to taste
In a large frying pan, cook turkey until cooked through. Remove turkey from heat and set aside. In the bottom of your slow cooker, add half of the head of diced cabbage, followed by diced onion, turkey, fresh tomatoes, green pepper and then uncooked brown rice. In a small bowl, mix together tomato soup, stewed tomatoes, ketchup, worcestershire sauce, dried mustard, diced garlic and salt & pepper. Add this mixture to slow cooker. Top with the remaining diced cabbage. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours. Serve immediately.

I know I am probably about to unleash a fury of ‘only-child-syndrome’ comments by suggesting what it is that I am going to suggest, but I am going to suggest-away regardless. :)
Now before I get pegged in the head with long-stemmed roses and boxes of chocolate , I will state this clearly: I am not against people celebrating their love for eachother on February 14th. As mentioned before, I am doing my own celebration this upcoming weekend, so I’d be a hypocrite if I poo-pooed all over Valentine’s Day. I am, however, kind of thinking of turning today into an ‘all about Kim day’ in an effort to say I Love You to me.
As a single-momma, I spend a great number of my days focusing on ‘not me’ so is it brutally selfish to take the day to do one or two things to spoil myself?!? I think not. :)
Here’s a few suggestions:
1) The obvious choice of zipping out at lunch and getting a pedicure from your local nail salon.
2) Pick up a bouquet of fresh spring flowers for your house on the way home from work. I’d avoid red roses unless you have a propensity for paying grossly inflated prices. ;)
3) Stop at Starbucks on the way to work and get something that is not ‘skinny’. ;)
4) Have lunch with your fave co-workers.
5) Stop at your local book store and pick up a fun new read.
6) Pick up real bubble bath (like the kind you used as a kid) and have a nice relaxing soak.
7) Order a pay-per-view movie that involves some kind of teen-drama that you are too embarassed to watch with anyone else…..cough cough….New Moon…..cough cough……
8) Eat an entire box of Kraft Dinner straight out of the pot whilst watching your film selection from point #7.
9) Go to bed RIDICULOUSLY early because you have chosen to not run 100 errands after work.
Could I be right Friends???? Is this the new V-day trend???? Either way…..I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, celebrating it however you want to!!! :)
I would like to take full-credit for the weather we have been currently experiencing because I have been BBQ-ing like a fiend lately and I think Winter has finally thrown in the proverbial towel (atleast for now). :)
This chicken recipe is a combination of a few different recipes that I have
made eaten over the years and it meets all three Nugget Culinary Criteria: 1) quick to make; 2) contains some kind of fruit; and, 3) involves his Mommy being at the BBQ which means he can laugh at me through the window.

For the BBQ Chicken
- 6-8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (you can make this recipe with chicken breast cut into chunks if you’d prefer)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp garlic
- 2 Tsp soy sauce
For the Peanut Sauce
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (I used Kraft Natural)
- 1/2 cup mango salsa (I used Newman’s Mango Salsa, but any salsa would work!)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp lime juice
- 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger*
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1/2 Tbsp diced garlic
- A bunch of cilantro (you can omit this if you are a cilantro-phobe)
*Tip: Store your fresh ginger in the freezer so that it grates quite easily. :)
Starting with the BBQ chicken, set your grill temperature to med-high heat. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce and pepper. Rub this mixture over your chicken pieces until coated. Place the chicken pieces on the grill until cooked through, flipping occasionally. While the chicken is on the grill, mix together the first seven (7) peanut sauce ingredients and place over med-high heat in a sauce pan. Stir constantly until the sauce thins out with the heat. You may wish to add some water to the sauce if you prefer a thinner consistency. Once heated, remove from heat. Back at the BBQ, I like to turn the heat up to full to char the chicken a smidge to create a crispy outer layer. Once cooked to desired point, remove the chicken from the heat and serve covered with peanut sauce and cilantro to top.
I served my chicken over rice, but you can serve it with any side that your heart desires!
